Dealing with Fleas
Fleas pose a risk to humans and to pets. Although fleas in the UK no longer spread disease, they do cause itchy sore bites which can become easily infected.
Pets also suffer with flea bites causing them to suffer a great deal of discomfort, they can also have an allergic reaction to the fleas saliva.
If pets are left with fleas for too long without treatment they can develop
anemia from the loss of blood (this is rare), it's important to treat them
quickly and well.
In the UK the most common flea type is the Cat Flea Ctenocephalides felis.
Their primary host is cats but they also bite humans and dogs.
Other fleas in the UK include, the Dog flea Ctenocephalides canis which also uses various mammals as a host, but most commonly it targets our canine friend and also cats. The Bird flea Ceratophyllus gallinae and Human flea Pulex irritans. We reveive a number of call outs each year for all types of fleas, living in homes and even hen houses in gardens.
There are a number of tell tale signs that fleas are in your home or work place. Check out our blog for more details.
Flea treatments for pets are available over the counter in pet shops and also from your local veterinary practice.
Barnard Pest Control can help with all types of flea. Before the treatment you will need to clear as much floor space as possible to ensure we can get to all areas which will make the treatment effective. Try and hoover all areas to remove any debris, eggs, larvae, pupae and adult fleas. Hoovering also stimulates the adult to hatch from their cocoon making them easier to eradicate with insecticides.
We will give you clear instructions on how to prepare your home. It's important you follow the instructions to ensure the best chance of wiping out the fleas.
We will undertake 3 visits to ensure the treatment works, you will have to be out of the property for up to 4 hours after the treatment, this includes pets.
